William Earl Bernard transitioned this earthly life into God’s reward of an eternal life on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.
William was born to the late Enoch and Pennie Bernard in Norfolk, VA on August 23, 1948. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Chesapeake, VA.
In 1968, William was drafted into the United States Army, where he was soon deployed to serve in Vietnam. During a tour in Cuchi, Vietnam, he survived an explosion where many soldiers lost their lives; an experience he shared with us as a remembrance. As an honored member of DAV Chapter 26, he diligently provided assistance and guidance to his fellow veterans over many years. He was passionate about seeing others’ achievements and often pushed them hard, as encouragement to reach their goals.
In addition to his military achievements, William had a myriad of interests. To name a few, he enjoyed traveling, cooking (lasagna was his specialty), and maintaining his lawn. He enjoyed all types of sports. His favorite football team was the Cleveland Browns, as brown was his favorite color. He often watched the news and liked to keep up with current events. He was a strong advocate for family; a true and loving Patriarch for many. He was always willing to listen, help, and advise.
In addition to his parents, William was also predeceased by one son, Cornelius Johnson, and one brother, Enoch Bernard, Jr.
William leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of over 50 years, Laura Bernard; one brother, Paul Bernard; three children, Cynthia Wise, LaTanya Fisher, and Brad Flythe; fourteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Mitchell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
