Atlanta, GA – A dark cloud hangs over Morehouse College as the institution mourns the loss of two of its students, Hugh Douglas and Christion Files Jr., who tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Labor Day. Both young men, just 20 years old, were on the cusp of their academic journey at Morehouse, set to graduate in 2025. The news of their untimely passing has left the college community in profound grief.
The tragic incident unfolded on Labor Day, around 5 p.m., when Georgia State Patrol responded to a car accident on Church Street at Linwood Avenue in East Point. The vehicle, occupied by the two students, was speeding south down Church Street when it attempted to overtake another car within a curve. Tragically, the vehicle veered off the road, colliding with a power pole. The impact caused the car to rotate, hitting another pole before overturning. Both Hugh Douglas and Christion Files Jr. were pronounced dead at the scene.
Morehouse College noted that these two young men were not only fellow students but had also been roommates during their sophomore year. Their loss is deeply felt throughout the college community.
Hugh Douglas was a student pursuing a business administration degree with a finance concentration. He was actively involved in numerous prestigious organizations, including the Morehouse Business Association, and held esteemed positions such as an AltFinance Fellow and a Goldman Sachs Fellow. Douglas had also completed a summer internship at Ares Management Corporation in Los Angeles. Notably, he was the son of former NFL player Hugh Douglas, who shared his condolences and photos on social media following the tragic accident.
Christion Files Jr., a business administration major specializing in marketing, was a standout both academically and in extracurricular activities. He served as the co-captain of the Morehouse Track & Field team, assumed the role of media chair for the Junior Class Council, and was a dedicated member of the Morehouse Business Association. Christion was also known for his photography and videography skills, which had a significant presence across numerous campus organizations, Morehouse Athletics, and the college’s marketing office.
