You will want for nothing – except, possibly, a well-padded wallet. In the main hotel, there is a spacious lounge with books and newspapers, several terraces and a charming gazebo. If you can rouse yourself, maps for walking routes can be borrowed. Otherwise, there's a spa with two treatment rooms and a rooftop garden with a pond and hot tubs.

The Lake House also offers its own small spa with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, plus hot tubs, an indoor pool, freshwater swimming, rowing and woodland walks. Its sitting room is comfortably casual with a house party atmosphere. Guests are whisked from Lake House to the main hotel by on-demand car transfers.

Service throughout balances professionalism with friendliness; nothing, it seems, is too much to ask. Dogs are allowed in two suites in the main hotel for £30 per night, but not in indoor public areas.
