It’s been a good Comic Con for Brie Larson; not only did the trailer for Kong: Skull Island, in which she will star, debut and go down a storm on Saturday, but on Saturday Night at the Marvel Panel it was finally confirmed, after much speculation, that one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood was true; Brie Larson will take up the mantle of Captain Marvel in the upcoming 2019 film of the same name, making her the very first female Marvel Superhero to have her own Solo Film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, over 10 years after the MCU shot to life with the release of 2008s Iron Man.
Little else is known about the film, with no other members of the cast announced and a director yet to be confirmed, but it is known that Larson will make her Captain Marvel debut not in her own solo film, but in the first part of the much anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, to be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the directing double act behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Her appearance in Infinity War will see her stand side by side with some of Marvel’s best known and most valuable properties, like Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow, as well as some of the lesser known Marvel Characters expected to make their debut in the film, which will be bigger in spectacle than anything Marvel have tried before.
We’re pleased to say that Marvel are really amping up the girl power on this one, with two female screen writers, and both Niki Caro (The Zookeepers Wife) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) in line to direct. Though nothing is confirmed as of yet, if either of them did go on to direct Captain Marvel, they would also become the first female director of a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though they did come close with Patty Jenkins, who almost directed Thor: The Dark World, and later went on to direct Wonder Woman’s big screen debut, the trailer of which also debuted at Comic Con on Saturday.
Also at Comic Cons Marvel Panel on Saturday, The Walking Dead star Danai Gurira was announced as an addition to the cast of Black Panther (2018). She will star alongside Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong’o and Chadwick Boseman, who made his debut as the titular hero in Captain America: Civil War, and will receive direction from Creed’s Ryan Coogler. Like with Captain Marvel, Black Panther will be spearheading the message of diversity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both in terms of on screen talent and the team behind the camera.
The second Doctor Strange trailer was aired first at Marvel’s Comic Con Panel, too, and despite just 10 days of filming there was even a bit of footage from Spiderman: Homecoming, with star Tom Holland announcing that The Vulture will be the Villain in this latest Spiderman reboot.
Other news from the panel was the first look at the new Guardians of the Galaxy Logo, the announcement that Kurt Russel will play a character called Ego, the father of Chris Pratt’s character Starlord, in the upcoming sequel, and the news that a Guardians of The Galaxy Theme park ride will find a home in Disneys California Adventure Park.
Also over the weekend, Marvel teased the return of Daredevil for a 3rd season at Netflix, and both Luke Cage and Iron First for their first series, as well as The Defenders, which will see all 3 unite with Jessica Jones and form a kind of small scale Avengers team.
