In tonight’s 9-1-1 recap, Chimney went ring shopping with Hen. Hen was his best friend. She was also a woman and Chimney needed a woman’s opinion on what to get Maddie. Plus, he needed someone to convince him that proposing was a good idea. Chimney does love Maddie. He loves the family they created together.

They were already living together and so marriage was just the next step. Chimney wishes the tax attorney hadn’t brought it up first because now he was afraid Maddie was going to believe he was only proposing to her as a part of a tax write off. That wasn’t the case for him. He was hoping that wouldn’t be the case for her either.

Hen fulfilled her best friend duties. She talked up Chimney. She helped him pick a ring. They returned to the firehouse and he told everyone else that he planned on proposing. Buck was really happy for him. He couldn’t wait to officially welcome Chimney to the family.

The only thing everyone was concerned with was how he planned on proposing. Chimney’s original plan was just to spring it on her after they put Jee-Yun to bed. It was Eddie who said that nowadays big proposals are a thing. Ravi also added that his original plan sounded too basic.

This was Chimney. Chimney loved doing over the top romantic gestures. He once skydived a proposal and so no one wanted him to go the simple route with Maddie. Maddie later stopped by the firehouse to pick up Jee-Yun. Everyone was acting odd around her. She noticed it and Chimney tried to tell her it was an off day.

Maddie had also asked him out to lunch, but then the sirens went off and Chimney got called away. Chimney and the others continued talking about the proposal in the fire truck.

They didn’t know how big he should go because none of them have ever done a big proposal. Eddie got married after finding out his then girlfriend was pregnant. Hen got married to help legalize the adoption process. Bobby didn’t even do things big with Athena. They had no idea on how Chimney should propose.

They just thought his other idea sucked. They later answered the call to a woman who thought she was choking on her teeth. She was actually choking on tonsil stones. It caused her to have really bad breath and her tonsil was bleeding from being so inflamed.

They were taking her to the hospital when Chimney admitted out loud that proposing was a bad idea. He said Maddie’s been through a bad marriage. She might not be in a rush to get married again. He changed his mind on proposing and Hen didn’t try to talk him back into it. Hen secretly believes that Chimney doesn’t want to propose out of fear. She thought Chimney was remembering when Maddie left him to raise Jee-Yun alone. She suspected he hasn’t entirely healed from that and on the other side of the argument was Buck.

Buck was Maddie’s brother. He spoke up for his sister. He didn’t like what Hen was saying when she implied that for once Chimney needed to be a priority. Buck reminded Hen that Chimney forgave Maddie when she came back and that they worked through their issues. Buck had tried going to Hen to convince her to talk Chimney back into his proposal idea only she wouldn’t have it. Hen thought everyone was so busy tip-toeing around Maddie that they made Chimney believe he wasn’t as important.

Hen said there was a reason Chimney hasn’t proposed in all this time. She believed her friend had some serious misgivings that needed to be addressed first before they go running into a marriage. Maddie could be feeling the same way for all they knew. They were so busy discussing the marriage as if it was a done deal that no one pondered if Maddie would say no or if Chimney was really happy? Chimney was still planning on returning the ring when they got called out to another scene. There were two roommates that accidentally threw away something valuable and they tried to get it back at the landfill.

They didn’t tell anyone they were going there. They started moving mountains of trash with no idea how to stabilize it and they created a hazard that later entrapped them under a pile of garbage. They were fortunate that someone had witnessed the accident. They called 911. The 118 came running over. They rescued both men and there was one guy who refuses to give up. He almost died and yet he still talked about returning to the landfill after he recovers because he wanted to find what he lost.

Chimney took inspiration from the guy’s story. He decided he should go ahead with proposing. There was just one problem doing so. He kinda lost the ring. The ring was gone by time Chimney went for it in his locker. He began suspecting his friends moved it to mess with him. They all denied it. He also asked Hen because he noticed that she didn’t try to talk him into marrying Maggie and so Hen admitted she didn’t think them getting married was a good idea. She waited until they were alone before giving him her reasoning.

Chimney heard her. She was his best friend and he understood she was concerned for him. But he reassured her that he does truly forgive Maddie for what she did. Hen once cheated on her wife. It took them a long time to get right again. They were now stronger than ever and so Chimney said that’s what happened with him and Maddie. They’ve worked through their issues. He was just insecure about himself. He was doubting himself, not Maddie. Chimney suspected he lost the ring on one of his calls.

They went back to tonsil stones’ house. The ring wasn’t there. They also went back to the landfill. They couldn’t find it there and someone who works there had called the cops on them. They got lucky because it was Athena who showed up. Athena let them go only they talked about it and Chimney suspected this might be a sign. He decided to hold off on proposing.

And the whole time it was Jee-Yun who had the ring. She got it from him when she visited him at the firehouse and Maddie was so tired after helping a mother find her lost child that she didn’t even notice the ring in the toddler’s hands.

THE END!
